Chopard José Carreras: From a Humanitarian Handshake to the Timepiece Honoring the Wiener Staatsoper

I. José Carreras - From the Pinnacle of Fame to the Battle for Survival

In the 1980s, the name José Carreras was synonymous with the absolute transcendence of operatic art. Born on December 5, 1946, in Barcelona, the Catalan tenor possessed a lyrical tenor voice capable of moving millions of hearts. Along with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, he was a member of the legendary trio "The Three Tenors" – who brought classical opera out of its artistic sanctuaries and closer to the general public.
The Cruel Turning Point of 1987
In 1987, while standing at the peak of his career, José Carreras received a medical diagnosis that turned everything upside down: he had acute leukemia. At that time, the survival rate was incredibly slim. Stepping away from the stage lights, he entered a fierce battle for survival with continuous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and finally, a painful autologous bone marrow transplant.
And… with an extraordinary will to live, he miraculously defeated death.
A Mission of Rebirth Born from Compassion
Refusing to keep that good fortune to himself, as soon as he recovered, on July 14, 1988, he officially established the José Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation. The foundation's goal was crystal clear: to fund medical research looking for optimal treatments, while providing maximum support for patients facing this life-threatening disease.

A Historic Handshake with Chopard for a Noble Purpose
Deeply empathizing with his artist friend's ideals, since July 1996, Chopard and José Carreras joined hands for a grand project: crafting a series of 5 limited-edition watch collections. The ultimate goal of the project was not commercial profit, but fundraising. Each limited series sold would generate 250,000 Swiss Francs (CHF) to be contributed directly to the tenor's Leukaemia Foundation.
These were not merely commemorative watches or a brand advertising campaign; these were true timepieces born for a noble purpose - connecting mechanical art with the aspiration to revive life.
At this point, the keyword set "Chopard José Carreras" along with the story of the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation became an inseparable part of the heritage of the neo-vintage era.
II. The Signature Chopard José Carreras Editions
This project gave birth to beautiful timepieces, with each edition honoring a prestigious Opera house - the very stages that witnessed José Carreras's legendary performances.

Artistic Highlight: Chopard's sophistication is most clearly expressed in the dial designs. For instance, on the 1997 Berlin edition, the power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock is creatively represented by a sequence of musical notes with increasing duration values: an eighth note, a quarter note, a half note, and a dotted half note.
III. Chopard Wiener Staatsoper Ref. 16/1236 (No. 20/250) – A True Collector's Gem
1. The Connection to Vienna, the “Capital of Music”
Released in 1996, this timepiece honors the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) - one of the oldest and most venerable cultural icons in the world. It was also here that José Carreras delivered sublime performances, receiving endless standing ovations from Austrian enthusiasts. Chopard chose this opera house to kick off the fundraising campaign, demonstrating absolute reverence for the roots of classical music.

2. Dial Design Language: When the Musical Staff Speaks
Looking directly at the dial, I was truly captivated by Chopard's exquisite treatment:
.webp)
- Dial: An off-white enamel tone that evokes a deep sense of nostalgia without being overly harsh under natural light.
- Hour Markers & Hands: Slender solid gold Roman numerals arranged in a radial layout. Harmoniously paired with these are the elegant gold leaf-shaped hands (feuille hands) that glide gracefully and calmly.
- Musical Note Patterns: At the center of the dial, eighth notes are subtly faded and cleverly printed. They do not create a cluttered feel, but instead appear like quiet melodies, requiring the viewer to closely inspect it to fully appreciate its romance. All of this beauty is perfectly protected under a high-grade sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective (AR) coating.
3. Engraved Caseback: Where the Story is Preserved
If the front showcases pure elegance, the back of this watch is a vivid miniature work of art. The solid gold closed caseback is intricately engraved with the classic Renaissance facade of the Vienna State Opera. Directly below this architectural masterpiece, the tenor José Carreras's name is cleanly engraved in a slender script. This is the most powerful "storytelling" detail, serving as a historical testament that confirms the exclusive value of this product line.

4. The Mechanical Heart: Caliber 891/2 and the Late '90s Haute Horlogerie Landscape

In 1996, the mechanical watch renaissance movement was in a strong transitional phase. To match the scale of such a major project, Chopard selected the caliber 891/2.
- Noble Origin: This movement was developed on a base from the renowned movement manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre – one of the "kings" supplying high-end ultra-thin movements to top-tier watch brands at the time.
- Outstanding Technical Specifications: This automatic movement features 36 jewels and is rigorously adjusted in 5 positions to achieve optimal accuracy. Furthermore, the 21K solid gold rotor border optimizes winding efficiency, beautifully complementing the elegant Geneva stripes (fausses côtes) on the movement bridges.
5. Case Proportions and Material Variants
This product line was released in two versions: warm, classic Yellow Gold and elegant, modern White Gold.

We would like to correct a technical specification that is frequently mistaken on international forums: the watch actually features a 38mm case diameter (rather than the 39mm recorded in some older documents), a highly ideal lug-to-lug length of 43mm, and an impressive thickness of just 8.7mm. This represents the golden ratio for a classic dress watch, allowing it to slip effortlessly beneath a gentleman's shirt cuff.

IV. Legacy

Looking back at the entire journey, the Chopard José Carreras series stands as a noble gesture spanning a full 12 years (1996–2008). The true value of these timepieces lies not just in their precious materials or the prestige of their mechanical movements, but in the deeply moving humanitarian story behind them. Every time one looks at the dial with its dancing musical notes, they are reminded of Carreras's resilient spirit in conquering his fate.
Today, editions from this collection occasionally surface at prestigious global auction houses such as Sotheby's or Dorotheum. Due to the highly limited initial production numbers, they are often quietly sought after by discerning collectors and kept in long-term private collections.
