Patek Philippe Calatrava 3923J in 18K Yellow Gold - Neo Vintage
Patek Philippe Calatrava 3923J in 18K Yellow Gold - Neo Vintage The Calatrava is the inspiration for Patek Philippe's logo. The Calatrava Cross first appeared in the 12th century, belonging to the Order of Calatrava – the oldest Catholic military order in Spain. Their original emblem was a red Greek cross, with its four ends delicately curved into the shape of a fleur-de-lis (lily). This symbol is associated with bravery, independence, and victory. Patek Philippe officially registered the Calatrava Cross as its brand logo on April 27, 1887. In 1932, just after acquiring the company, the Stern brothers (Jean and Charles) decided they needed to create an iconic, elegant, yet more accessible watch line to solidify the brand's position. Consequently, the Calatrava collection was born under the strong influence of the German Bauhaus art movement, famous for its philosophy "Form follows function". The watch's design eliminated all superfluous details, focusing entirely on its core function: displaying the time as clearly and elegantly as possible. The first Calatrava model was the Reference 96 (Ref. 96). It featured a perfectly round case with a diameter of just 30.5mm, applied faceted baton hour markers, Dauphine hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o'clock. The Ref. 96 established a gold standard for dress watches that remains to this day. During the first two years (1932-1933), the watches in this collection utilized the 12-ligne manual-winding movement from JLC. It wasn't until 1934 that the brand introduced its in-house Caliber 12-120 movement. In 1974, following the Quartz Crisis, Patek launched the Caliber 215 PS with significant upgrades, demonstrating the vitality, artisanal beauty, and peak precision of traditional mechanics. The Ref. 3796 was produced between 1982 and 1999, while the Ref. 3923 ran from 1986 to 1999. These are the two most outstanding descendants, inheriting almost the entire DNA of the original Ref. 96, with diminutive case diameters of just 30.5mm and 31.5mm. From the year 2000 onwards, the size of the Calatrava line began to increase to 37mm, as seen in modern models like the 5196. Consequently, many collectors are now looking back to acquire Neo-vintage Calatravas (especially the Ref. 3796 and 3923), and delving even deeper into the vintage realm to seek out the classic, early-generation Ref. 96s.
