Cartier Tank Louis Platinum 1601-1 Ultra Flat (pre CPCP) - Men's watch
Cartier Tank Louis Platinum 1601-1 Ultra Flat (Pre CPCP) Before 1960, almost every Cartier Tank was produced in Paris and assembled by hand, one watch at a time. In its early years, the Tank L.C. was not yet the most celebrated Tank model; vintage records suggest that the Tank Normale and Tank Cintrée were, in fact, more popular in the early 20th century. During this period, Cartier also worked with Edmond Jaeger to develop ultra-thin cases and the movements to suit them. LeCoultre executed the technical side, while Cartier completed and finished the final product. This collaborative model helps explain why the Tank Louis became associated, from a very early stage, with a character all its own: slim, elegant, discreet, yet full of presence. In the early 1960s, the Tank L.C. entered a new chapter. Following internal changes within the Cartier family and the separation of the Paris, London, and New York branches, the Tank Louis began to take on different interpretations. Cartier London simplified the minute track and developed its own proportions, while Cartier Paris introduced the Mini and the Extra-Plat. It was also during this period that the Tank L.C. gradually evolved from an elegant object for a refined inner circle into a visual icon recognized by a much wider public. The true turning point came with the reunification of Cartier from the 1970s onward. Under Robert Hocq and Alain Dominique Perrin, Cartier became more structured, its watch catalog more clearly defined, and production gradually shifted to Switzerland. In 1973, the Louis Cartier Collection was introduced, establishing the Tank L.C. as an official pillar of the collection. Then, in 1977, the Must de Cartier Tank helped bring the Tank silhouette to a far broader audience, making the “true” Louis Cartier version even more desirable in the process. The Tank Louis Platinum 1601-1 (Pre-CPCP) stands precisely at the crossroads between classic vintage and neo-vintage. If the Tank Louis is a design language, then the platinum ref. 1601-1 from the pre-CPCP era is one of the most beautiful expressions of that language in the neo-vintage period. It is not so old as to carry the inconveniences of early 20th-century watches, yet it has not fully entered the world of CPCP (Collection Privée Cartier Paris), a realm with its own distinct aura. That is why the pre-CPCP 1601-1 carries such an unusual charm and remains deeply coveted by many collectors, in some cases even more so than the CPCP versions.
