The Lange 1 collection was first introduced by the brand in 1994, which is also considered the year A. Lange & Söhne was reborn, after being absent for 50 years due to the impact of World War II. The signature design element of the Lange 1 is the outsized date display, arranged according to the Golden Ratio (1.618). The off-center hands are symmetrically balanced across the dial. The first Lange 1 models were equipped with the L901.0 calibre, which utilized the gear train of the JLC Calibre 822. In 2003, the brand launched the Lange 1 Moonphase (Ref. 109.032), upgrading the movement to L901.5. The movement’s back features a three-quarter plate, with two small framed zones in the center that the brand referred to as “Little Islands.” 12 years later, in 2015, A. Lange & Söhne released a modernized version of the Lange 1 Moonphase (Ref. 192.032 & 192.029). This generation featured several noteworthy upgrades compared to the 2003 version: The dial font was slightly reduced in size, and the bezel was made slimmer to align with a more contemporary aesthetic. The moonphase complication was significantly enhanced, now featuring an integrated day/night indicator. The outsized date mechanism was improved for smoother transitions (no longer a step-jump as in the older version). The movement was upgraded to Calibre L121.3: The balance wheel position was shifted from opposite the crown to adjacent to the crown. The “Little Islands” were removed for a cleaner layout. A critical improvement was that the entire gear train was now manufactured 100% in-house by A. Lange & Söhne, no longer using parts from JLC.
